# Poznań Game Arena and Zjazd Twórców Gier

Thu
01
Nov 2012

Last weekend I've been in Poznań on Poznań Game Arena and Zjazd Twórców Gier (that would be Game Developers Convention in English). Here is the gallery of my photos:

Poznań Game Arena was an event about gaming. It wasn't very big and I didn't see many game developers or publishers showing their new titles, but surely there was some interesting stuff like PC hardware, driving simulators, Xbox and Kinect and of course beautiful hostesses. A real tractor was also inside, advertising Farming Simulator game. Some other interesting places were a shop with lots of T-shirts with gaming-related overprints or Retro Area with oldschool computers like Atari or Commodore available to anyone who wanted to play these old games.

One thing I like about this event is that it showed hardcore gaming is not dead. In the era of simple, casual, 2D games for smartphones, tables and Facebook everyone is talking about the decline of hardcore PC gaming. I had this thought while on PGA that it's just from the marketing and finance guys' point of view. They sell lots of mobile devices these days because many people buy their first smartphone or tablet. But it doesn't mean we are going to throw our PC-s. Everyone has a PC or laptop. They just aren't able to sell us a new model every year or two like it was some time ago, so they talk about smaller money, smaller market or whatever. Obviously, more people play games like Angry Birds than games like Call of Duty. But hardcore gaming is still there for those who like it, so it was nice to see all these PC-s, powerful graphics cards, extreme overclocking and good looking 3D games.

ZTG, on the other hand, was an event for game developers, taking place at the same time and in the building next to PGA. I've been on ZTG 2 years ago and my experiences were mixed. This time I must tell the organizers did their homework and made an event that could be called a conference, not the convention. 2 days, 4 parallel sessions including talks, discussion panels and movie screenings - that's a lot of interesting stuff. In this year's edition everything was on time and just felt well prepared. One thing that remained is the "spirit" of the event, coming from the people that organize it. They are from the community creating games using middleware, like RPG Maker or Multimedia Fusion and so ZTG is focused more on game design than programming (a talk about terrain rendering techniques was one exception) and more on becoming indie games developer than getting a job in a AAA game developing studio.

When listening talks on ZTG, I had the reflection that there are two general types of talks on every gamedev conference. Both have some pros and cons. First is more scientific - presented by a student or a lecturer from a university. It can teach some subject or show the results of some novel research. But some may say that it is often too theoretic and far from what is really used in game industry, like when about neural networks, genetic algorithms or procedural content generation. Second is a talk from someone representing a game company. This one is often atractively presented and looks like the presenter knows a lot about the subjects from his own practice. But it often doesn't tell anything new or profound as real developers from famous game companies are either not allowed to talk about the details of their work, or just don't need to - it's their name in the agenda what matters, not what they say :) So it's easy to complain on either type of these talks, but for me a good conference finds balance between them. In my opinion, ZTG did this right.

# WeCan 2012 Demoparty

Mon

Sep 2012

Last weekend - 14-16 September 2012 in Łódź, Poland, there was a multiplatform demoscene party called WeCan. I've been there and I think it was great event! For more information, see these links:

My favourite production was Wave AtraKKtor - a 4k intro coded by my friend KK/DMA. He took first place. Congratulations Krzysiek! Maybe next year I will make some production for this party, whether demo or game...

# Ribbon Runner - WGK 2012 - Games Bonanza

Tue

Sep 2012

Last weekend (31 August - 2 September 2012) I attended 2nd edition of National Conference on Computer Games Development in Gdańsk, Poland. This time I didn't have to travel far because I now live in Gdańsk :) It was great to see face-to-face again all these people from Polish gamedev and Warsztat community. Lectures were interesting (well, at least some of them :) There were other attractions too like poster session or Developers Showcase, where developers presented their game projects.

I spent sunday participating in Games Bonanza - a competition where teams of up to 4 people had to develop a game in 8 hours... and we took first place! Thanks for voting for us. The theme this year was "space-time warp", so we came up with an idea for a game which is 2D, but played on a 3D surface that folds, tars and glues like a sheet of paper. Here is a video from our game:

Title of the game - "Ribbon Runner", as well as name of our team - "';DROP TABLE uczestnicy --" we came up in a hurry. Our team was:

We developed it in Visual C++ 2010 Express, using Direct3D 9 for graphics and FMOD library for sound. As a base we used framework prepared by Krzysiek. You can download full source code here: WGK2012.ZIP (12.5 MB). In case you want to compile and run it yourself, remember that: 1) Release version crashes on level 5. 2) Levels don't finish automatically, you can switch them with F1..F9 keys.

# Demoscene: Revision 2012 and Moleman 2

Fri

Apr 2012

Last weekend - during Easter - there was a big demoscene party in Germany called Revision, the successor of Breakpoint. HD live videostream was available during the event and now all productions can be downloaded from Pouet.net (
also via FTP). Geeks3d.com summarizes most interesting prods and links to YouTube videos, but of course it's better to download and watch these amazing demos and intros in the highest quality, running on your machine.

Another interesting news related to demoscene is Moleman 2 - The Art of the Algorithms - a 1.5 h long documentary movie about demoscene, now available to download for free in HD and even Full HD quality. I really recommend this movie. I think it's very professional and perfectly explains what the demoscene is all about. Plus the interviews are interlaced with nice visuals and music from demos :)

# IGK-9'2012 - PrisonEscape Game

Mon

Apr 2012

Our team (called Rosyjscy wieśniacy - from Russian peasants multiplication algorithm) - that is Krzysztof Kluczek "Krzysiek K.", Karol Kuczmarski "Xion" and me - scored 1st place in the gamedev compo at IGK-9'2012 conference! Thanks for all your votes, I'm glad you like our game. The theme this year was "Escape", so we decided to make an oldschool looking 2D game with pixel art, where a prisoner tries to escape, runs through constantly scrolling map, avoids policemen etc. It is coded in C++ using Direct3D 9. Here you can download binaries:

# IGK-9'2012 Starts Tomorrow

Thu
29
Mar 2012

9th Polish Game Engineering Conference IGK-9'2012 starts tomorrow in Siedlce, Poland. Just like in previous years, we expect interesting lectures on Friday evening and whole Saturday. I especially look forward to hear about NoSQL databases and sphere tracing, as these are subjects that I always wanted to learn about but I didn't find enought time to do it before. On Sunday there will be traditional competition where teams of up to 4 people have to develop a game from scratch during 8 hours. But first of all this is a great opportunity for passionate game developers to meet and socialize. So see you in Siedlce!

# Copernicus Science Centre

Wed

Nov 2011

Some time ago this year I've been in Copernicus Science Centre in Warsaw. It's a huge interactive museum presenting numerous experiments from different fields of science. Of course for me most interesting was the stuff related to images, shapes and colors. There was a long queue near the entrance of the building and visiting all the exhibits - even briefly, took a lot of time, but still if you come to Warsaw and have a whole free day, I really recommend visiting Copernicus Science Centre. Here are my photos: Centrum Nauki Kopernik @ Picasa:
