# PolyJam - Global Game Jam 2011 in Warsaw
Tue
18
Jan 2011
Global Game Jam is a worldwide initiative to organize a 48-hour game development competition in many different locations, at the same time. For more information, read the extensive GGJ Wiki. This year it takes place on January 28-30. In Poland there are even 3 registered places. KrakJam takes place at AGH University in Kraków. It is organized second time, by Koshmaar and the "Shader" scientific group.
For the first time the competition will also be held in Warsaw. It's called PolyJam and it's organized by "Polygon" scientific group at Warsaw University of Technology. Here is the list of PolyJam jammers. I invite everyone who is interested in game development (not only programming, but also graphics, sound, game design and other disciplines) to register.
I'm going to participate, yet I'm not quite sure how the atmosphere of such event looks like. What's the best approach to creating games at such competitions? Is it making a simple 2D game from scratch using some simple C++ framework, using some middleware like Unity, or maybe developing a web game in JavaScript of Flash?

# My Talk about OOP on Polygon Group

Jan 2011
This Wednesday on the Polygon scientific group I'll give a talk titled "Pułapki programowania obiektowego" ("Pitfalls of Object-Oriented Programming" - but that's just a translation, not to be confused with great English article with same title). It will be a polemics with the recent Veldrin's presentation on design patterns and also another expression of my interest in the topic of DOD (Data-Oriented Design). I'll post more on this subject soon, including slides from my presentation.

Here are slides from my yesterday lecture "C++ in Game Programming" (in Polish):
C++ w programowaniu gier.pdf
C++ w programowaniu gier.pptx
Comments are welcome. I consider this an attempt before writing something bigger of this kind that I hope to submit as a paper to one of Polish game developers conferences next year, like IGK.

I've joined "Polygon" - a scientific group of game developers on Warsaw University of Technology (Website, Forum, Facebook). That's true I'm no longer a student, but this fact doesn't forbid me to drink beer just like they do :) Tomorrow I'll give there a lecure entitled "C++ in game development". Slides will be available for download in the coming days.

# On/Off Expo
Sat
23
Oct 2010
I've spent whole day on On/Off Expo that currently takes place in Warsaw. I've met many interesting people there from both gamedev.pl and demoscene. Poeple from demoscene organize a place there with "retro games" where everyone can play some games on old computers like Amiga or Commodore. But the rest of expo is about the newest and most advanced technology available to ordinary customer. You can find lots of hardware there like graphics cards, motherboards, pendrives, speakers, headphones, cellphones, 3D TVs and more. You can play on PC, Xbox 360, some driving and flight simulators, Guitar Hero, DJ Hero, Wii, Kinect and even the unreleased Tron Evolution game. Generally there are lots of attractions so if you live in Warsaw, I strongly recommend visiting the expo tomorrow. Here are my photos from this event. One of them:

# Allegro Party
Tue

Sep 2010
Last weekend I've been in Poznań on Allegro Party - party for users of Allegro.pl - online auctions website. But we went there with my friends from the demoscene not only because we trade stuff online, but as organizers, as one of the highlights of the event were classic computers like Amiga or Commodore, ready to play good old games. Here are my photos from the event.
NEW: Some more information about this party (in Polish) can be found here:
Now I try to catch up with news on my Twitter and on the blogs I follow. One of these news in GPU Technology Conference by NVIDIA, which took place Sep 20-24, 2010 in San Jose, USA. Much interesting new graphics and HPC-related hardware and software have been shown there. Many coverages can be found over the Internet, like this one. What attracted my attention the most is a plenoptic lens technology presented by Adobe (I recommend the video at the bottom of this page). Their camera is equipped with a matrix of many small lenses, giving kind of a 4D image. It can be then processed to a single photo with software-controlled depth of field. There are also more than a hundred posters presented on the conference, available for download here. Posters is a nice form for presenting research results because it's short and attractive.

# Game Event, Technology Event

Sep 2010
Another interesting events took place recently. IDF - Intel Developer Forum (Sep 13-15, 2010, San Francisco, USA) is organized by just one company, but they've shown some interesting stuff there. Intel manufactures CPU-s as well as GPU-s, so there was something about hardware, as well as high-performance and parallel programming. Some topics from IDF are covered in recent entries of SoftTalk blog.
After E3 in USA and GC in Europe, this time there was a game event in Japan - TGS - Tokyo Game Show (16-19 Sep, 2010). As always, there is much new information and multimedia data after such event, like trailers and news about games under development. Some of them are specific to the exotic Japanese culture, but most of them is about games that will be available on the West too. I like watching trailers :)
